The pad is removed carefully and in a controlled way — never by force. Loosen the cuffs gradually as directed and work around the hoof in stages so the hoof wall does not come with it. Remove any glue residue with a rasp or sandpaper and inspect the hoof: the hoof wall should be intact and healthy underneath. Take the chance to assess how the hoof has developed. If in doubt, have your farrier take a look at the next trim.
