When boots twist – causes and fixes

A boot that twists on the hoof usually has one of two root causes: it is too big, or the hoof has a shape that is less suitable for that boot model.

Hooves with very vertical walls – such as contracted hooves – may need a wedge pad or a change to the Scoot Adjust, thanks to its adjustable rear section.

Fixes for twisting:

  • Build up the hoof wall where it has become overloaded, straightened up and is ”missing” hoof.
  • Correct trimming. Check that heels, flares and break-over are balanced – imbalance is a common cause.
  • Change of model. For an unsuitable hoof shape, consider the Scoot Adjust.

Build up the hoof wall – with your farrier or on your own – where it has become overloaded, straightened up and is “missing” hoof. The hoof gains extra support and a more balanced, centred load.

Support pads that seat up into the sole’s collateral grooves are also used at times – they act as a natural plug but also give stability against the boot slipping or twisting. More on that in the remedial lesson.
