Here is how to check the fit.

- The front gap. Close the front straps. There should be a gap at the front of roughly 6–8 mm – the size depends on the shape of the hoof walls.
- The wiggle test. Lift the leg, grip the sole firmly and twist gently from side to side, clockwise and anti-clockwise. If the size is correct the boot will not rotate or move more than a millimetre or so. If it rotates and is loose, it is too big.
- The rear captivator. With the hoof on the ground you should be able to slip one finger between the rear captivator and the skin. If you cannot, the captivator is too tight and needs reshaping.
- Hoof wall. The boot walls should sit tight against the hoof walls.
- Pastern strap. With the leg bent at 90 degrees you should fit two fingers between the strap and the front of the pastern. Too tight and it drags the rear of the boot back and forth over the hoof as the pastern flexes – causing rubbing.
