Nothing works for everything, and Scoot Boots are no exception. On an asymmetric hoof the measurements you receive will often differ markedly from the hoof’s actual requirements – which is why correct measuring is of the utmost importance.
Common challenges:
- Different hooves front and back. Hind hooves are often narrower and need the Slim model, which works just like the Regular but suits narrower and slightly contracted hooves.
- High or low heels. The Scoot Adjust is built to handle various heel heights, especially high or low heels, via the fully adjustable rear straps. The Bulb Strap Extender (included) lifts the bulb strap into the correct position for high heels.
- Upright hooves versus long sloping Thoroughbred hooves. The back of the hoof – its volume and structure – varies greatly and determines how much adaptation is required.
Wedge pads for low and under-run heels
For hooves with low or under-run heels we recommend wedge pads. They come in different degrees – which one you choose depends on how much lift the hoof needs.
The wedge pad lifts the heel from inside the boot and relieves the back of the hoof. Check the degree with your hoof care professional or vet – too much lift can shift the load incorrectly.
Scoot Boots over sliders
A special case worth knowing: Scoot Boots can be used over sliders – the wider and longer shoes used on the hind hooves in reining.
This works thanks to the boot’s open design at the heel bulbs: the slider passes through the opening, and the shoe at the same time holds the boot in place. Scoot Boots are the only hoof boot on the market that fits over a slider.
In practice this gives good traction on slopes, dry grass and gravel, as well as protection and stability during transport to events. Without slippage the risk of falls and injury drops, and the horse can move freely.
Studs for slippery ground
All Scoot Boot models can be fitted with studs. This gives secure grip on ice, packed snow and other slippery surfaces – whether you ride Classic, Adjust or TheraRide.
How to fit ice studs:
- You need a drill/driver, a 4.5 mm drill bit and the stud key included in the pack.
- Pre-drill the hole – but not all the way through the sole. Only a couple of millimetres in.
- Screw in the stud using the stud key.
Choose the right stud size. The size depends on the thickness of the sole, which follows the boot size:
- Standard – fits Scoot Boots sizes 4–11
- Small – fits sizes 000–3
- Mini – fits sizes M00–M3
One pack contains 20 studs and one stud key. Check the studs regularly and replace worn ones – a loose stud gives poorer grip and can damage the sole.
An important principle: if the boot cannot be made to work securely, it is better to walk away than to allow a poor fit. Protection that fits badly does not help the horse.
