To build a truly balanced diet, you need to consider the environment your horse lives in. Many of us already do a forage analysis—but how often do we check the water our horses drink every day?
🌾 Forage analysis (Grovfoderanalys)
In Sweden, our soils are naturally low in selenium, which means our hay is very likely deficient in this essential trace mineral. On top of that, protein and sugar levels can vary a lot depending on weather and harvest timing.
A forage analysis gives you the baseline—so you can avoid underfeeding protein or overfeeding sugar and energi for example.
💧 Water analysis
A horse can easily drink 30–50 liters/day, Swedish groundwater often contains higher levels of iron and calcium (kalk):
– High iron: may build up without you noticing and can reduce the absorption of zinc and copper which can affect coat, skin–and hoof quality.
– High calcium: hard water can significantly increase total calcium intake, making it harder to keep the right calcium-to-phosphorus ratio needed for skeletal health.
The bottom line
Precision matters. Analyzing both forage and water helps you supplement what’s missing—without adding minerals that are already present in excess.
✨ Coming this spring
We’re preparing to launch a Sweden-made mineral feed designed to support hoof and skin health, formulated specifically for Nordic environmental conditions. Keep an eye on our page for updates.
