The right size starts with the right measurement. Always measure a freshly trimmed hoof – ideally 1–2 days after trimming, and no later than 14 days after – so the measurements are consistent. Use a ruler or tape measure and measure in millimetres (mm) for the best precision.
1. Length: Start at 0 mm at the toe and measure straight back to the end of the hoof’s buttress – not to the bulbs of the heel.
2. Width: Measure horizontally across the hoof’s widest points.
The most common mistake: measuring the length too far back. If you measure all the way to the bulbs, the measurement is too long and you’ll get a boot that is too big. Measure to the end of the buttress.
Tips for the best measurement:
- Lift the hoof and measure from underneath on a flat surface.
- Measure 1–2 days after trimming for consistent values.
- Measure both front hooves – they can differ in size.
- Use millimetres, not centimetres, for the best precision.
