Forage — hay, haylage, pasture — is not a supplement to the ration. It is the ration. But forage is a perishable with wide variation. A hay analysis is the best feed investment you can make: it tells you what the horse actually gets and what may need supplementing. Follow up with a hands-on body-condition check every couple of weeks — the winter coat lies to the eye, but the hands feel the truth.
