Preparations

A good transition begins long before the shoes come off. Start with an assessment with your farrier: sole thickness, the frog, cracks or imbalances. Choose a farrier experienced with barefoot horses if you can. Photo-document the hooves from four angles, roughly monthly. Set an honest timeline — a full transition can take up to a year. That is not failure, it is biology: the hoof grows about one centimetre a month.
