The importance of foraging and digestive health

In the wild, the horse spends 16–18 hours a day foraging. When we serve feed in the manger, the natural search behavior disappears, which often results in boredom and the development of stereotyped behaviors.

Stimulates saliva production: When the horse looks for small feed particles in the texture of the mat, the chewing time increases and thus saliva production. Saliva is the horse’s natural defense that helps buffer stomach acid, which is critical in preventing stomach ulcers.

Use and Practical Care

The activation mat is extremely versatile. It can be filled with everything from chopped hay, alfalfa, pellets and muesli to pieces of apple and carrot.

Pro-tip: For sensitive or nervous horses, you can start with “high-quality” treats clearly visible on top of the mat, then gradually bury the food deeper in the structure as the horse becomes comfortable with the product.

Cleaning: The silicone’s non-porous surface makes it more hygienic than plastic or rubber mats.
