Pulling the Shoes and the First Weeks

The shoes are off — now the most sensitive period begins. It is normal for the horse to take shorter steps on gravel, for the hoof wall to wear, and for the horse to choose softer ground. Make sure you have well-fitted, removable hoof boots for the start. Warning signs are different: persistent lameness even on soft ground, a strong digital pulse, heat in the hoof — then pause and contact the farrier or vet. Trim lightly and often rather than heavily and rarely.
